Research on the Academic spin-off phenomenon in Europe and in the USA
The Ministry of Economic Affairs in the Netherlands asked TSI to execute a study within all Dutch Universities (14) and 15 other Research Institutes on the available instruments in the area of spin-off creation. Also out-put data on this topic had to be measured. The Dutch results had to be benchmarked with the outcome of similar data in 7 European countries and the USA.
Content
A comprehensive study has been undertaken by TSI with the support of the consultancy expertise of a Dutch firm. For the research aspects in this study support was obtained from NIKOS (NL). A report with very interesting facts and suggestions has been published by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs*. An English version is available on http://www.topspin.org/index.php/83
Results
As one of the outcomes of this study a "spin-off index" for each of the research institutes was published. This index represents the number of spin-off companies based on 1000 staff members / students or based on 100 million Euro research income. It came out that on average Dutch universities create 6.4 spin-offs annually. The seven universities abroad realised on average an index of 7.1
